Bluesky 1.60 update introduces a fresh butterfly logo, enables public posts to be viewed without login, and more.

In preparation for the Christmas weekend, the popular decentralized social media platform Bluesky has introduced a new update. The Bluesky 1.60 update includes significant additions and redesigns. Notably, the platform has unveiled a new logo, replacing its previous blue sky with white clouds with a butterfly. The company explained that this logo change was prompted by users naturally using the butterfly emoji to represent their Bluesky handles. Additionally, the platform now allows posts to be public by default (unless users choose otherwise), enabling anyone to view and search for posts without the need for a login or account. However, the platform remains invite-only.

Bluesky announced the update on its official handle, saying, “App version 1.60 is now coming. We have a new logo! Bluesky is emerging from its cloud cocoon to become a social butterfly.” The new logo appears in two different colors – a blue butterfly on a white background and a white butterfly on a blue background.

Bluesky gets a new butterfly logo

In a blog post, the company explained its reasons for redesigning the logo. It stated: “Why did we choose the butterfly? Well, of course it flies. But most importantly, it’s a symbol of change and change. We noticed early on that people were organically using the butterfly emoji to show off their Bluesky grips. We loved it and adopted it as it spread. The butterfly speaks to our mission transform social media into something new.

But what if you don’t like the new logo? The message also has an answer to that. “The great thing about the open web is that anyone can build on it and further modify it! Maybe you like birds more. Well, someone could build BirdSky and you could switch to it and still be on the same network, still have the same friends and still see the same messages,” it said.

Public messages and other additions

In addition to the logo change, another significant addition was the disclosure of messages. Announcing this, Bluesky’s message said, “Messages, Profiles and User Search are now available without logging in! You can finally share your high-quality messages in a group chat or articles. If you don’t want the Bluesky app to show your messages to logged out users, please disable in the Control tab.

The Bluesky 1.60 update also adds RSS feeds to profiles. Now users can access their posts via RSS by inserting their profile link into an RSS feed reader so that it is automatically discoverable.

In addition to this, the company fixed several bugs on the platform. You can read about it here.
